Its called El Jalapeno taqueria and seafood now. Look, you have to go here. Small place but lots of love and care the family owned place puts into their food. Young lady up front was amazing...owner and wife came out separately to ask is how everything was, and it was simply 5 stars... the best and so fresh. Relaxing environment to relax with high-end food they care about. God bless this business, the family, employees, and customers, and I will be back when back in town.
CATFISH or SWAI?? During my lunch break, I decided to venture out and try something new. This particular restaurant had received rave reviews on Yelp, so I thought it was worth a shot. As soon as I walked in, I was warmly greeted by the owner and his wife, who had an incredibly friendly demeanor. The first thing that caught my attention was how clean and fresh the restaurant smelled. When it came time to order, I opted for the catfish basket with shrimp, which also came with hushpuppies and fries. The prices were surprisingly affordable compared to other places that are price gouging. Unfortunately, I had left my card at home, but luckily they accepted Apple Pay, making the payment process a breeze. As I made my way to my table, I couldn't help but notice the relaxed ambiance, with oldies playing in the background, vintage records adorning the walls, and a few TVs scattered around. The owner personally came over to set up my table with utensils, napkins, and ketchup. After a short wait of 15 minutes, my food was ready, and I must say, it looked and smelled absolutely delightful. The presentation was top-notch, earning a perfect score. Taste Test: While preparing to eat I poured a little hot sauce on my plate and dashed some pepper on fish and fries, it's just a natural habit that I have. I started eating the fries because the fish was steaming hot, I liked how the fries were skinny and fried well done, definitely giving that a 7.5 only because they didn't have any flavor. Next, I tried the hush puppies and to my surprise they had corn on the inside, that was a different twist, they were also fried well, I would give them an 8 for sure. Shrimp was juicy and fried perfectly. Next was the star player, the catfish or so I thought. I broke off a small piece just to try it without any condiments and it tasted like a true southern batter. While I was chewing I noticed the texture was different from what I was expecting from a catfish. I'm a Texas native and grew up fishing, catching our own fish and frying it for dinner so I'm super experienced with all types of fish but catfish is one that I know very well. Catfish is a fatty flaky white fish and this fish was only flaky and it had no fat on it. I was then drawn to the shape of the fish and that was a huge red flag, ladies and gents this was not catfish. To my disappointment I was eating Fried Swai Fish. Let me tell you the biggest difference in catfish versus swai fish, you will notice that swai has a big chunk of meat on the front of the fish, next swai does not have fat on it. Catfish do not have a big chunk of meat at the front and it does have fat and grey skin on it. Even if a restaurant removes all the grey skin you will still notice the texture difference when eating it. I decided to still rate this company 4 stars because customer service was terrific and the cleanliness of the restaurant. However, if you were going to switch the fish out with something else to allow the customers to make that decision, there are plenty of customers that would actually prefer swai over catfish. But if we're paying for catfish and you're serving us something else that's not fair to the customer.
Ocean Shak did not disappoint! We were in the mood for some shrimp and catfish which is how we stumbled across this restaurant on google. The catfish filets and shrimp were big and everything tasted fresh, it was delicious! Customer service was great, Mike took good care of us from start to finish. Can't wait to go back and try something new.
First off customer service is amazing. You'll be greeted with a smile and the owner and his wife will answer any questions you have. I had the catfish with shrimp and it was amazing. Lightly battered and seasoned well and fried to perfection. Home made hush puppies were delicious. Nice quiet eating area with a nice ambience. I will definitely be going back again.
Came here for a late lunch during the week. I arrived about 3pm, and I was the only one in there. The owners (husband and wife I think) were so nice! I got the one catfish fillet and shrimp basket and subbed fried okra for the fries, they charged me a few dollars more but it was 100% worth it! The fried shrimp and the friend okra were cooked and seasoned to perfection! I did have one small hiccup, after receiving my food I asked them if I could have my catfish fried a little harder and they did it for me with no problem!! The apologized for it but it really wasn't a big deal! Once it was cooked a little more it was nice and crispy! My only feedback is that I wish the actual piece of catfish was a little more meaty, I didn't get the nice thick flaky pieces I'm used to seeing when I eat fried fish. The tables on the inside each had a picnic table cloth on them, it gave the vibes of your everyday mom and pop restaurant! All in all, I will 100% be back! The owners were so so so nice, and I would definitely get the shrimp basket with fried okra next time, and I will try the gumbo as well!
Found this amazing place just by opening up google maps and seeing what's around me for lunch. I decided to give it a try and not one regret. I ordered Combo #2 and the food was fresh off the skillet. It tasted soooooo good, the batter is perfectly spot on. Looking forward to coming back to try other items on the menu. The staff is so nice and friendly, definitely make you feel welcomed.
Delicious! Fries super tasty, hush puppies perfectly golden and crispy and flavorful. The catfish portions are huge and yummy. Mom and pop run. Highly recommend!
Ocean shake is like a very great place to have anything you want, been there once and have a great time, so you def! Would too.
Fast friendly service; fulfilling foods. No disappointment stopping here. Good musical vibes as well. Chose to dine in at the last minute.
Walked in slightly after 1:30 p.m, no other customers inside, but greeted by the owner with a warm inviting smile. He recommended the fish and shrimp basket w/fries and hush puppies right off the back. His wife in back fried my catfish and shrimps to a perfectly golden brown with just enough seasonings. Just as good as my own!!! ( I'm picky about my catfish and shrimp!) In the end I had a great lunch with great service in a VERY clean trendy casual dining area. I took menus back to work to share! Will definitely be back for lunch and ready to try more from the menu.
